Founded in 1996, the Computers for Families program was created in partnership with the Santa Barbara County Education Office to provide computers and Internet access to local students lacking these important educational tools at home.
Leveling the playing field
Computers for Families operates in south Santa Barbara County elementary schools. Teachers identify students lacking technology at home and their families are invited to a distribution event. There, families receive training and a refurbished computer, as well as information about applying for discounted Internet through either Cox Communication’s Connect2Compete (C2C) program or Frontier.
Reusing rather than recycling
Computers for Families refurbishes computers donated by Santa Barbara County businesses, organizations, and individuals. By refurbishing and redistributing these computers, the hardware is reused for several more years and some seven tons of hardware is kept from the landfill each year.
Tech skills for youth
In a win-win partnership with Computers for Families, adjudicated youth at the Los Prietos Boys Camp refurbish computers and gain technical skills that serve as possible pathways to future jobs. They also assist with distribution events and experience the positive difference they make.
