Computers for Families Intern

Background: Partners in Education/Computers for Families collaborate to provide computers and low-cost internet connection to families with a mission to bridge the digital divide in our community. Remote and in-person positions available.

Job Title: Computers for Families Intern

Pay: Unpaid Internship

Reports To: The Computers for Families Intern will report to the Computers for Families Program Associate.

Job Overview:

This is an amazing opportunity to give back in your community. Many families across the Santa Barbara area do not have the means for owning a computer or internet access. Partners in Education’s Computers for Families (CFF) program provides in-home access to technology tools that support academic success.

Candidates will support Partners in Education’s Computers for Families program with a focus on Computers for Families (CFF) distribution, registration, general support of Computers for Families programming & digital divide research. Duties include interacting with recipients via phone, registering families through online portal, follow up calls with CFF’s applicants regarding the service/set up installation, helping with computer set-up, office support for CFF and research based activities in support of CFF.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Understand program eligibility requirements, components of the program, and communicate these to families and collaborators
  • Support families in completing online application for a free device
  • Support in calling Internet Providers call center to help approved customers activate service and set up installation
  • Interact with event attendees and manage any lines that may form while people are waiting to complete the application process
  • Administrative support for CFF

Qualifications:

  • Over 18
  • College student
  • Bilingual Spanish strongly preferred
  • Strong communications skills preferred
  • Familiar with the components and functionality of a computer 
  • Detail oriented
  • Microsoft Office skills

Reports To: The Internship Program Assistant will report to the Internship Program Associate.   

Job Overview:

This internship position develops building administrative skills by supporting the Internship Program in providing professional leadership to organize, administer, and provide support for a nonprofit organization. The Internship Program Assistant supports the Paid Student Internship Program, a program that provides paid, experiential learning opportunities to disadvantaged high school students. The selected students complete seven weeks of Job Readiness Training before they are matched for their internships with local businesses and nonprofits based on their career interests. The Internship Program Assistant plays a key role promoting the Paid Student Internship Program; recruiting students; providing adequate training and preparation to the students before entering the professional world; and collaborating with new and returning internship host sites.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Support the Job Readiness Training workshops by updating training materials; greeting students and volunteers upon arrival to training; collecting and processing employment paperwork; checking students’ weekly assessments; communicating on a regular basis with students to ensure they feel supported.
  • Help with business outreach to find internship sites for high school interns by conducting potential placements research; creating informational materials; and making exploratory phone calls.
  • Assist with student placements by scheduling job interviews; processing time cards; making regular phone calls and/or sending e-mails to support host supervisors; reporting any success story and/or host sites concerns.
  • Participate in student selection process by scheduling and conducting virtual interviews; welcoming and instructing volunteers; reviewing students’ applications; and following up with students.
  • Ensure that our program goals are met by collecting and reviewing post-internship and annual surveys.
  • Contribute to maintain data and confidential files up to date according to office protocol.
  • Help organize and coordinate special events.

  • Interested in education, sociology, psychology and/or social studies desirable.

Pay: Unpaid Internship

Reports To: Dependent upon assigned program.

Job Overview:

The Administrative Intern develops building-level administrative skills by supporting  members of the Partners in Education team in providing professional leadership to organize, administer, and provide support for a nonprofit organization.

The Administrative Intern is responsible for various administrative and communications functions within the office including office management, receptionist duties, and event coordinating support.

Responsibilities and Duties May Include:

  • Assist department personnel in assigned administrative, planning, organizational, technical, and professional tasks
  • Community outreach
  • Working within a database to maintain and update records
  • Participate and network at our various events
  • Performs general clerical duties: photocopying, faxing, mail distribution and filing
  • Operate telephone system; forward calls as required.
  • Conducts research on events (potential vendors, cost savings etc.)
  • Communicates with program participants via email, telephone, and mail
  • Maintains inventory of general office supplies
  • Creates and modifies various documents using Microsoft Word/Excel
  • Office Organization

Qualifications:

  • High School or equivalent
  • Courteous, professional, and pleasant
  • Positive and energetic interpersonal skills
  • Ability and willingness to handle office support work
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • 10-15 hours a week preferred. Schedule is flexible.
